Why New Mexico?

People love New Mexico for its diverse landscape, rich cultural heritage, and abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities. The state is known for its deserts, mountains, and forests (we literally have it all), as well as its historic Native American pueblos, Spanish colonial missions, and vibrant art scene. Not to mention, the state's mild climate and clear skies make it a popular destination for stargazing and other outdoor activities.

High Rolls Mountain Park is a small community located in the Sacramento Mountains. These are old, storied hills with easy access Lincoln National Forest and White Sands.

High Rolls Mountain Park and Cloudcroft are accessible by car and has many beautiful vistas and several hiking trails winding through the surrounding wilderness and access to so much natural beauty.

We’re not kidding when we say this area is full of outdoor adventure and will never get old!

    Our namesake town is located at nearly 9,000 feet in elevation and surrounded by 1,103,441 acres of National Forests and offers endless opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, hunting, wildlife watching, and taking in spectacular views.

  • Rails to Trails is an epic hiking location in High Rolls, New Mexico with mountain and dessert views.

    Rails to Trails

    Less than 5 miles from the hostel is the popular Rails to Trails area. History buffs and experienced hikers will love these trails that climb along an old railroad system. All the while, serving spectacular views as you stand under canopies of tall Pine and Aspen trees.

    Alamogordo

    Alamogordo is a small town on the way down to White Sands about 15 minutes from High Rolls. Here you'll find big supermarkets and a variety of restaurants. It is also home to The Museum of Space History.

  • Ski Cloudcroft

    For winter adventures, Ski Cloudcroft ski areas is a great choice for families, beginners, and enthusiastic sledders! It’s a budget-friendly ski mountain and just 20 minutes from the hostel! This is a great spot for activities all year round, as it also has summer tubing.

    Organ Mountains

    The Organ Mountains are a rugged mountain range next to Las Cruces. On both sides, you'll find wonderful recreation areas and hiking trails (Aguire Springs, Dripping Springs/Soledad Canyon/Baylor Canyon) with small waterfalls.

    Three Rivers

    At Three Rivers Petroglyph Site you can find over 21,000 petroglyphs (products of the Jornada Mogollon people between 1000 and 1400 AD). You can also find a lot of nice hiking trails through the White Mountain Wilderness.

  • Valley of Fire, Carrizozo

    The Malpais/Valley of Fire is a large lava flow near Carrizozo, about 1h from Alamogordo. The recreation area provides access to the Malpais and a large view over the Tularosa Basin. From here, you can also drive into the mountains to Ruidoso before looping back to the hostel.

  • Ruidoso

    Ruidoso is a mountain resort that is at 6.920 ft in the rugged Sierra Blanca Mountain range. The town also offers shopping, dining, as well as winter sports at Ski Apache, and summer hiking.

  • Carlsbad Caverns

    Just 3h from High Rolls, the Carlsbad Caverns are a stunning and extensive cave system. You can also enjoy hiking around the caverns or enjoy one of the many species of bats.
