The Malpais/Valley of Fire is a large lava flow near Carrizozo, about 1h from Alamogordo. The Recreation Area provides access to the Malpais, a campground and a large view over the Tularosa Basin. It's possible to go the same way back or to take the way over the mountains and Ruidoso.
